Employability Mapping
What It Is and Why Management and Strategy Institute Created It

Why Employability Mapping Exists
Both approaches skip the question that matters most to employers and to the professional paying for the course: does this credential match the work this person does, or the work they want to be doing next?
A certification that sits far below your real responsibilities undersells you. One that sits far above them can leave you with a credential you can't back up in an interview. Employability Mapping closes that gap by starting from the job instead of the certificate.
Management & Strategy Institute · Employability Mapping™
Answer eight questions about what you actually do at work — not what a course badge says — and we'll map your responsibilities to the certification level that matches your job today, and the one that opens your next role.
Your Employability Mapping Result
Employability Mapping is a framework originated by Management and Strategy Institute to measure how certification aligns with real job responsibilities. This assessment gives a directional recommendation based on your answers and is not a substitute for a full certification exam. Results are not guaranteed and this answer may not reflect the true abilities or responsibilities of any one individual.
Where the Concept Came From
How Employability Mapping Works
The framework rests on a simple idea: the belt levels in Six Sigma aren't really about how much you've studied. They describe different kinds of responsibility. Employability Mapping looks at the signals that separate one level from the next in real workplaces.
The first signal is involvement. Someone who hears about process improvement in meetings is in a very different position from someone who leads projects, and different again from someone who sponsors them without running them. The second is scope, meaning whether your work touches a single team, a department, several departments, or the whole organization. The third is accountability for results, which covers whether you track and report measurable outcomes like cost savings, defect reduction, or cycle time, and who you report them to.
The fourth signal is whether you train or mentor others, since developing other people's skills is a hallmark of the higher levels. The fifth is authority, meaning whether you control budget or staffing for improvement work. The sixth is how the people around you describe your role, because the label your manager would use is often a more honest measure than your official title. The last two look at how often you personally use structured tools such as DMAIC and root-cause analysis, and what a replacement would most need to know to take over your job.
Each answer is scored, and the total places you on a map that runs from Yellow Belt through Green Belt, Black Belt, Master Black Belt, and Champion. The result is a directional recommendation. It shows where your current responsibilities sit and, by extension, which certification would formalize the work you already do or open the door to the next role.
Employability Mapping and Six Sigma Certification
Six Sigma is the natural first application of the framework because its belt system is a ladder of increasing responsibility. Here is how each level typically maps to real work.
Yellow Belt fits professionals with early exposure to process improvement. They support projects, understand the vocabulary, and contribute to improvement efforts without leading them. For someone in this position, a Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification is the fastest way to add a recognized credential while building toward more responsibility.
Green Belt fits professionals who run improvement projects part-time alongside their regular duties. If this describes your week, a Six Sigma Green Belt certification formalizes work you are already doing and closes the gap between your résumé and your real contribution.
Black Belt fits professionals whose jobs are substantially defined by leading cross-functional improvement initiatives and owning measurable results. A Six Sigma Black Belt certification puts a credential behind work you are already accountable for.
Master Black Belt fits professionals who train and mentor the people running projects, across more than one part of the business. The Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt certification corresponds to this enterprise-level role.
Champion fits leaders who sponsor and fund improvement work at a strategic level without running the projects themselves. The Six Sigma Champion certification signals that you know how to evaluate and prioritize improvement investment.
Professionals who want to move up the ladder over time can see every level in one place in the Six Sigma Certification Bundle.
Who Employability Mapping Is For
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Employability Mapping?
Employability Mapping is a framework developed by Management and Strategy Institute that aligns a professional's real job responsibilities with a certification level, so that the credential they pursue matches the work they actually do.
Who created Employability Mapping?
Management and Strategy Institute originated the Employability Mapping framework in 2026.
Is the assessment free?
Yes. The assessment is free to take and takes only a few minutes.
Does my result mean I'm qualified for a certification, or that I don't need one?
No. The result is a directional recommendation based on your own answers. It isn't a substitute for a certification exam, and it doesn't guarantee any hiring or career outcome. Results may not reflect the true abilities or responsibilities of any one individual.
What if my result is lower or higher than I expected?
That's useful information. A result below your title may mean your role is more strategic than hands-on. A result above it may mean you're already doing work that your current credentials don't reflect. Either way, the result gives you a starting point for deciding your next step.
Does Employability Mapping apply to certifications other than Six Sigma? Six Sigma is the first application of the framework. The underlying principle, matching real responsibilities to credential levels, applies to other professional fields, and Management and Strategy Institute plans to extend it.
Recognition and Coverage
Podcast Episode · October 7, 2026 The Six Sigma Belt You Think You Need Might Be the Wrong One MSI explains Employability Mapping, a framework that matches your real job responsibilities to the Six Sigma belt level you operate at, and how to use the free assessment and worksheet to choose your next certification. Available on Spotify.
Employability Mapping Worksheet
The online assessment gives you a quick read on where your work sits today. The worksheet takes you further. It's a four-page fillable PDF that helps you map your real responsibilities to a Six Sigma belt level and build the evidence to back it up. You start by taking inventory of what you actually do in a typical month, then score your work against the same eight signals the assessment uses. From there you record your strongest projects with measurable results, and you finish by identifying the gap between your current level and the role you want next. The last page is a one-page summary you can hand to a manager, an HR contact, or a recruiter to start a conversation about your development or your next step.
To get the most from it, work through the four parts in order and answer based on the job you have today, not the job you hope to have. You can type directly into the PDF on your computer or print it and fill it out by hand. Take your time with the proof-of-impact section, because specific numbers such as dollars saved, hours cut, or defects reduced will serve you well in a résumé, a performance review, or an interview. Then share page four with your manager as the starting point for a conversation about your next certification. Your results are a directional starting point, not a guarantee or a substitute for a certification exam.
